Vitalik Buterin Supports ERC-4337 for Decentralized Fee Markets

Vitalik Buterin emphasized that ERC-4337 is important because it creates decentralized fee marketplaces for smart contract wallets.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently tweeted that ERC-4337 is more important than ever as account abstraction (AA) becomes more popular.

ERC-4337 experienced a notable upswing in activity during the month of February, as an astounding 2,989,000 transactions were executed across various channels. At 945k, the number of active AA accounts skyrocketed, with 845k new accounts registered, setting new records for adoption.

However, in the midst of this trend, Buterin brought attention to the fact that ERC-4337 provides a decentralized fee market, which is crucial for the development of user activities inside smart contract wallets.

Buterin emphasized that ERC-4337 is crucial to creating a strong fee market that does not depend on reputation systems or centralized players. By focusing only on fees, the protocol guarantees that user activities will be consistently added to the public mempool.

The design of ERC-4337 offers a safe framework for nodes in the mempool to determine if a transaction is viable; it is based on validation and execution criteria. While improving transaction integrity, the protocol protects against possible denial-of-service assaults. To achieve this goal, it prohibits unlawful state access and enforces stringent gas limitations.

Features such as the “Paymaster” capabilities also make it easy to separate the process of initiating a transaction from the payment itself. In addition to reducing on-chain data, signature aggregation capabilities provide substantial cost savings for scaling solutions and rollups.

Buterin made it clear that ERC-4337 did not solve all of the problems. The ability for current EOAs to transmit activities financed by outside sources is one of them, as is the ability to upgrade from EOA to contract. These problems, says the co-founder of Ethereum, might require Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that alter the consensus, such as EIP-3074 and EIP-5003.

Still, Buterin seemed upbeat about the direction things are heading in, hailing ERC-4337 as a major milestone on the road to complete account abstraction. In the end, the co-founder of Ethereum wanted to thank the hardworking people who were behind these developments.
