U.S. official demands three years in prison for Binance CEO CZ

U.S. Department of Justice officials have recommended that Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) serve 36 months in prison for violations of the Bank Secrecy Act.

The guy behind Binance, Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, as he is more often known, is in a bit of a jam. The Justice Department in the United States withdrew a strong recommendation. They propose a minimum sentence of three years in prison for Zhao.

Following Binance’s enormous $4.32 billion fine and CZ’s departure as CEO last year, he admitted to violating the Bank Secrecy Act. Now, in anticipation of his sentence on April 30, the DOJ is pursuing not just his release from prison but also a $50 million fine.

Considering that the usual maximum for this kind of violation is just 18 months, this is rather significant. However, the DOJ is now demanding double punishment because, let’s be honest, they believe CZ’s acts were more than a slip-up. Their understanding is that his actions were well-planned and consequential. Their plan all along has been to make the guy the scapegoat.

Reuters broke the story on a chilly April 24 in New York. CZ has to be ready to spend 36 months behind bars. The request for a harsher punishment seems to have merit, given that last year he admitted to the violations that resulted in that substantial fine.

The United States attorneys’ office in Washington claimed that a 36-month extension was warranted due to the seriousness of Zhao’s willful violations of U.S. law.

Don’t forget that Binance failed to disclose more than 100,000 suspicious transactions associated with terrorist organisations, including ISIS, Hamas, and al-Qaeda. Even the troubling trade of child abuse materials and the filthy money of ransomware were associated with the site.

He Yi, who co-founded Binance with CZ, is nevertheless confident. Yi, speaking at a Dubai meeting, was quite positive, saying that CZ’s present standing in the US is fantastic, considering all the odds.

The Western District of Washington will soon hold CZ’s sentencing hearing, when he faces the possibility of a sentence of twelve to eighteen months in jail, with guidelines suggesting twelve to eighteen months. Citing a family health problem, CZ recently attempted to fly off to Dubai, where he stays. He is now free on a $175 million bail with stringent travel limitations.

They attempted to seize his passports because the U.S. Attorney’s Office was unhappy with his trip request. This long legal drama is already complicated enough without adding Zhao’s worldwide connections as a dual citizen of Canada and the UAE.
