Sleuth Claims Fresh Evidence Connects Jack Dorsey

According to Seán Murray, Bitcoin’s first transaction occurred on Jack Dorsey’s mother’s birthday, while Satoshi mined the last block on Dorsey’s father’s birthday.

Summary

• In a post on X, American entrepreneur Jack Dorsey faces accusations of being Bitcoin’s pseudonymous founder, Satoshi Nakamoto.
• Seán Murray, president and main editor of deBanked, claims that Bitcoin’s first transaction occurred on Dorsey’s mother’s birthday, January 11, and the last Bitcoin block mined by Satoshi allegedly occurred on his father’s birthday, March 5, 2010.
• BitMEX Research questions the notion, stating that it becomes increasingly difficult to determine when Satoshi mined blocks as the “patoshi pattern” deteriorates over time.

American entrepreneur Jack Dorsey has once again been accused of being Bitcoin’s pseudonymous founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, in a post on X, reigniting controversy about one of crypto’s most enduring mysteries.

In a Feb. 15 post on X, Seán Murray, president and main editor of the financial news website deBanked, assembled a lengthy list of Bitcoin-related facts, statistics, and dates that he claims is also linked to Dorsey, who has been one of Bitcoin’s most vocal supporters for over a decade.

Jack Dorsey’s Satoshi Nakamoto hypothesis

In an April 2020 interview with computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman, Jack Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter (now X) and digital payments startup Square, denied being Satoshi Nakamoto, saying, “No, and if I were, I’d tell you.”

Murray, on the other hand, believes Dorsey is “probably” Satoshi Nakamoto, noting that Dorsey had exhibited cypherpunk tendencies since at least 1996 while studying computer science in college, such as wearing Hashcash inventor Adam Back’s RSA shirt and later writing a manifesto in 2001 about making a mark in the world without leaving a trace.

Birthdays, Timestamps, and Brute-Force Addresses

One of Murray’s most intriguing findings was that the first Bitcoin transaction occurred on Dorsey’s mother’s birthday, January 11, while the last Bitcoin block mined by Satoshi allegedly occurred on his father’s birthday, March 5, 2010.

In response to the thread, BitMEX Research questioned the notion, saying that it got increasingly difficult to determine when Satoshi mined blocks as the “patoshi pattern” degraded over time.

Murray further claimed that Satoshi joined the Bitcoin forum on November 19, Dorsey’s birthday.

Meanwhile, Murray stated that the original Bitcoin source code papers are all timestamped at exactly 4 a.m., though it is unclear which timezone—a time Dorsey previously used in his Twitter profile.

Satoshi is alleged to have used “brute force” to generate Bitcoin addresses, including one beginning with “jD2m,” which Murray believes stands for “Jack Dorsey 2 Mint,” referring to Dorsey’s previous house at 2 Mint Plaza in San Francisco.

Possible Satoshi Location Leak From Stolen Email

Satoshi’s “GMX” email was also stolen on September 8, 2014, and Murray believes the hacker attempted to blackmail Satoshi by disclosing information regarding his ties to St. Louis, Missouri.

Murray pointed out that Dorsey was born and raised here. Murray alleges Satoshi also “accidentally” entered into Internet Relay Chat on January 10, 2009, revealing a genuine IP address situated in California, where Twitter was based and where Dorsey spent a lot of time.

The Failure of Wikileaks

Murray stated that Satoshi advised individuals on the Bitcoin forum not to donate Bitcoin to WikiLeaks on December 5, 2010. He also mentioned that Twitter received a “secret court order” to disclose all of its WikiLeaks-related information nine days later, on December 14. Dorsey was not the CEO of Twitter at the time, although he remained on the company’s board.

Murray believes Satoshi last visited the Bitcoin forum the day prior, on December 13.

Murray allegedly referenced supporting material to back up his assertions in ten of the fifteen “chapters” he wrote about Dorsey’s ties to Satoshi. He has been working on the evidence since at least December 23, 2024.

Dorsey has never answered nor refuted any of these postings, Murray said.

Satoshi’s Theories Are Widely Criticized

Several X users questioned if Satoshi, the originator of unfettered money, would subsequently limit content, as Dorsey’s Twitter did following US government action.

Others questioned if Satoshi would wear a “Satoshi” shirt in public, let alone to the Super Bowl, as Dorsey did in 2024.

Whether Dorsey founded Bitcoin or not, Bitcoin cypherpunk Jameson Lopp chastised Murray for being “that person” who accuses someone of being Satoshi without providing evidence.
