Pavel Durov Makes His First Public Statement Following His Arrest in France
Durov was critical of his “unnecessary” detention in France and emphasized that Telegram continues to advocate for freedom of speech and expression.
Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, has addressed the public for the first time since his detention in France in August. He protested the authorities’ decision to target him personally rather than Telegram. Durov also emphasized that Telegram remains steadfast in its dedication to free expression, even if it necessitates exiting markets that are in opposition to this principle.
Additionally, Ryan Salame has been implicated in an FTX bribery scandal, and Binance founder CZ has been permanently prohibited from overseeing the exchange. Almost 90% of crypto firms in the UK have failed to obtain FCA approval due to insufficient fraud and money laundering controls, which makes it appear as though protecting investors is an afterthought to many new crypto companies.
Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, has addressed the public for the first time since his detention in France in August. Durov expressed his surprise at being detained by French authorities in his public message and noted that Telegram has a legal representative in France to address regulatory matters. He also stated that the detention was unnecessary, as French authorities had multiple methods of contacting him, as he is a French citizen and a frequent visitor to the French Consulate in Dubai.
Durov also declared that the organization is prepared to withdraw from markets that violate the fundamental principles of free speech and expression. He explicitly stated that Telegram’s mission is not financially motivated, but rather driven by a desire to safeguard fundamental human rights, particularly in regions where they are being compromised. Furthermore, Durov expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision to prosecute him personally rather than the company.
French President Emmanuel Macron denied that the detention was politically motivated following the incident. Nevertheless, this declaration failed to assuage the international community’s accusations that the French government was stifling free expression. The TON Society and tech industry leaders both issued appeals for Durov’s release, which exacerbated the backlash.
