Nike will Expand Into Video Game Fashion in Response to the NFT Push

Nike has stated that its .Swoosh platform will continue to expand into video game wearables; however, the presence of additional NFTs remains uncertain.

It is not yet obvious if future gaming activations by the sportswear giant Nike would inevitably include NFTs, but on Friday, the company’s blockchain and digital wearables division, .Swoosh, said that it will increase its presence in the video game industry in the next year.

The value of a virtual product should be determined by the pleasure it brings you when you use it to express yourself or unlock a physical product. Nike’s .Swoosh said on their blog that the actual delight of collecting and being a real fan is more important than just making a transaction.

Nike In-Game Wearables are a new range of virtual items that will take our involvement in video games to a whole new level. Unlike our digital treasures (like OF1), in-game wearables allow you to buy and wear them inside your favorite video games.

In the future, players will just need to connect their game accounts to use these in-game wearables, so there’s no need for cryptocurrency wallets, as stated in the article. However, whether or not these next wearables will be NFTs remains unknown.

Over the past few years, Nike has been active in the blockchain space via its RTFKT acquisition and.Swoosh platform. However, the company has been cautious with the wording of its digital products and hasn’t always released them on the blockchain.

Although .Swoosh has previously announced plenty of digital shoe NFTs on Polygon and a 2023 announcement hinted at potential EA Sports and Fortnite NFT collaborations, the latter turned out to be a blockchain-free digital collectibles effort.

Nike differentiates its “digital collectibles,” or NFTs, from its “in-game wearables” in a blog post from last Friday. This differentiation might indicate that the latter are unrelated to cryptocurrency but could instead be more similar to its Fortnite partnership.

But, the post goes on to say that later this year, Nike digital collectibles (NFT) owners will have the option to transfer their items to personal crypto wallets. This will open up trading opportunities on “marketplaces that guarantee royalties to creators” (i.e., Nike and its affiliated artists).
