Grupo Elektra Mexican retail behemoth Accept Bitcoin Lightning Payments
Grupo Elektra, a Mexican retail and banking conglomerate, will enable support for the Bitcoin Lightning network, according to a tweet by owner Ricardo Salinas Pliego.
According to the billionaire, the new payment feature would be available in Electra’s stores “very soon.” Salinas Pliego, Mexico’s third-richest individual with an estimated net worth of $15.4 billion, has been a passionate backer of Bitcoin for quite some time.
He announced in November that he will invest 10% of his wealth in the largest cryptocurrency. According to U.Today, the billionaire recently tweeted that his Banco Azteca would soon become Mexico’s first Bitcoin lender.
Over the last year, Bitcoin’s primary scaling solution has grown in popularity, with social media behemoth Twitter allegedly developing a tipping function backed by the protocol.
Support for bitcoin payments will be enabled “very soon,” according to Pliego (Ricardo Salinas Pliego). Other companies under the Grupo Salinas conglomerate, of which Pliego is the founder and chairman, may add bitcoin support in the future.
Grupo Elektra’s owner made the statement in response to the launch of bitcoin payments on El Zonte beach in El Salvador. Recall that he had expressed his support for the first cryptocurrency on numerous occasions.
For instance, he revealed in November 2020 that he had put 10% of his “liquid investment portfolio” in Bitcoin. BTC was valued at around $ 17,000 at the time, so the billionaire made a tidy profit.
Pliego added the hashtag “bitcoin” to his Twitter profile in February of this year. The value of the first cryptocurrency increased by several percent in response.
