Discord Puts a Temporary Halt on Crypto Plans
Jason Citron, the founder of social chat network Discord, posted a picture indicating an impending connection with cryptocurrency wallets MetaMask and Wallet Connect.
It’s been less than three days since Jason Citron, the CEO, and creator of social messaging network Discord, posted a picture indicating an impending connection with cryptocurrency wallets MetaMask and Wallet Connect. However, the unfavorable response to the tweet is more than enough to convince the CEO to reconsider. And now, less than three days after the first tweet, whatever cryptocurrency aspirations the corporation had may have been put on hold.
When CEO and creator Jason Citron tweeted the ostensibly harmless remark, an extraordinary outpouring of hostile replies ensued. Among these answers is one that reads:
Say farewell to artists sharing their work online, much less in discord. Reposters were already awful, but this takes the cake. If someone can just right-click and sell your artwork for “ownership,” even if you spent hundreds of hours making it, what’s the point?
Another retorted cynically, “Man, I can’t wait to inform my friends that Discord is promoting pyramid schemes at the expense of the environment and convince them to cancel their Nitro memberships in favor of competitor platforms.” We appreciate the heads-up!”
Another answer said, “Hey, I canceled my nitro and, based by the other responses and the hundreds of downvotes on this feature in your feedback site, it seems that many others have done the same.” Discord has to keep far away from any crypto nonsense.”.
Additionally, a quick scan of Discord’s help channel reveals hundreds of postings from dissatisfied customers advising the firm to avoid incorporating crypto or NFTs.
Clearly, in response to the outpouring of support from the Discord community, the company may be putting any plans for a crypto feature on hold for the time being. Thus, Citron acknowledged that Discord currently has “no plans to launch” the cryptocurrency wallet feature.
This is when things begin to get interesting. Citron states that ‘there are no present plans. This might mean ‘we would revisit this’ or ‘futuristic plans exist’. Whichever perspective one takes, it’s easy to see why the new tweet was essential.
To begin, the Discord community’s crypto opponents have a legitimate justification for threatening to terminate their Nitro memberships. Nitro is Discord’s premium subscription, which costs $9.99 per month and includes animated avatars, a larger upload limit, and a variety of additional features. Additionally, it is the principal source of income for the business. According to Wall Street Journal projections, the corporation would make $130 million in 2020 and $45 million in 2019.
Additionally, the business is now valued at $15 billion after a $500 million investment headed by Dragoneer Investment Group in September.
As such, it is only natural that the corporation will listen to this essential and rapidly rising user base. However, for the time being, it seems as if Discord has some long-term intentions for the platform.
