Dencun triples Ethereum data access as per Polygon zkEVM founder

When the Dencun update for Ethereum happens in the middle of March, it will supposedly deliver cost-effective improvements to data availability for Layer 2 (L2) solutions. Jordi Baylina, co-founder of Polygon zkEVM, spoke about how Dencun and the release of EIP-4844 in particular were important for Layer 2s like Polygon zkEVM.

The much-anticipated scaling solution, EIP-4844, or “proto-danksharding,” was addressed at an Ethereum Core Developer meeting. By enhancing data capacity and decreasing transaction costs, the proposal seeks to increase Ethereum’s scalability beyond what is possible with current L2 solutions.

The Dencun update will address issues including data availability costs, which Baylina claims will lead to improved L2s. “The cost of data availability is the major hurdle for ZK rollups right now,” he said. According to him, the EIP-4844 of the Dencun upgrade has the potential to revolutionize the data availability and gas costs on Polygon zkEVM.

Also, according to Baylina, implementing EIP-4844 might result in cost savings of 10 to 50 times. He went on to say that Ethereum’s overall data availability capacity will grow threefold after implementing EIP-4844.

He went on to say that ZK rollups such as Polygon zkEVM, Linea, zkSync, and Scroll will all benefit from the update. In addition, Baylina covered the topic of Polygon zkEVM’s preparations for EIP-4844 integration.

He said that optimistic rollups, such as Optimism and Arbitrum, entailed a simpler integration technique than ZK rollups, such as Polygon zkEVM. To integrate with Ethereum’s Boneh-Lynn-Shacham cryptographic signature mechanism, Polygon zkEVM must include BLS pairs in its proofs. In order to enable data compression, he said, “A new proof system is essential.”
