best golfers from Africa will compete for a Bitcoin reward On the Sunshine Tour
Golfers in Africa will be awarded Bitcoin prize money thanks to the groundbreaking endorsement of the Sunshine Tour by the Bitcoin Foundation.
New sponsorship of South Africa’s Sunshine Tour means that top golfers from Africa and Europe may look forward to significant Bitcoin (BTC) rewards at the conclusion of the 2022 season.
The Order of Merit, the ultimate leaderboard of the Sunshine Tour, is a year-long competition amongst golfers. There is a strong presence of Luno in South Africa and the African continent as the official title sponsor of this year’s overall rankings.
Luno has decided to replace its rand-based rewards for the Order of Merit’s best golfers in favour of Bitcoin-based ones. The golfer who finishes first in the Luno Order of Merit will get 500,000 rand in BTC, which at the time of this writing is $31,000 or 30,000 euros.
Additionally, Luno will sponsor the Sunshine Tour’s professional golfers with BTC worth 1000 rand each to encourage them to check out the exchange’s mobile app. The second and third-place finishers will receive 200,000 and 100,000 rand in BTC, respectively.
The Sunshine Tour plans to switch to a points-based ranking system in May 2022 as a result of the new sponsorship. A more even playing field is intended for players competing to be the season’s top Order of Merit finisher.
In addition, the number one slot comes with a year-long luxury automobile sponsorship, as well as entrance into the US Open and the British Open, two of golf’s major tournaments.
A few months ago, Cointelegraph had the opportunity to speak with Luno’s general manager for Africa, Marius Reitz, at the partnership declaration at the renowned Houghton Golf Club in the heart of Johannesburg:
On the one hand, it’s notable because there is Bitcoin prize money, which is a first for both South Africa and the continent as a whole.” It’s the first time a crypto firm has sponsored a sporting event in South Africa, to my knowledge.
