Switz national postal service will issue the first crypto stamp on Polygon

Swiss crypto stamps are a type of digital collectible that are linked to physical stamps issued by the Swiss Post. By creating tradable digital stamps, Switzerland’s national postal office is attempting to bridge the divide between real stamps and the digital cryptocurrency market.

On Sept. 20, the Swiss Post announced the impending launch of the “Swiss crypto stamp,” a digital collection tied to a real stamp worth 8.9 Swiss francs issued by the postal service.

Swiss cryptocurrency stamps will serve as a digital version of actual stamps and will be maintained on a blockchain. “Each design creates a unique nonfungible token that is kept on the Polygon Blockchain,” a Swiss Post spokesperson told.

Through a QR code printed adjacent to the physical stamp, purchasers will be able to discover a digital twin of their physical stamp online. The Swiss Post says the crypto stamp will feature one of 13 possible designs and will be available for collection, exchange, and trading online.

Customers will be able to trade or sell their crypto stamps on platforms such as the leading nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace OpenSea, according to a Swiss Post official. “Swiss Post sells solely the Swiss crypto stamp; cryptocurrency trading occurs independently of Swiss Post,” the spokeswoman noted.

The next Swiss crypto stamp appears to offer a similar experience to NFTs, as some of the stamps will include an unusual design.

“Some are more common, while others are quite uncommon and much sought after. There are 65,000 copies of the most popular digital design available, but just 50 of the rarest. One thing is certain: the Swiss crypto stamp signals the digitalization of collecting, exchanging, and trading stamps,” the Swiss Post noted.

Swiss crypto stamps will be available in late November, with 175,000 stamps available at select Swiss Post locations on Nov. 25. According to the release, the Swiss crypto stamp would be the country’s first of its sort.

Switzerland is not the first jurisdiction to explore blockchain technology in order to provide collectible digital stamps. Austria’s postal office stated in May 2021 that it will incorporate NFC chips into its Crypto Stamp 3.0, the third generation of its limited-edition NFT postage stamp collector series. Austria issued the country’s first crypto stamp in 2019.
