An individual threatening to attack Mumbai International Airport unless it turned over $1 million worth of bitcoin within 48 hours was apprehended by India’s anti-terrorism team.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport reportedly received the threat via email at about 11 a.m. on Thursday, as reported by The Times of India.
The subject line of the email said “Blast,” and it went on to say, “This is your last warning.” Unless one million dollars is sent to the address in Bitcoin within 48 hours, Terminal 2 will be blasted. After 24 hours, another alert will be sent.
An official from Mumbai International Airport Limited received the threat email while working at the airport’s quality and customer support division. The ransom demands immediate payment or the airport will be attacked within 48 hours, according to the warning letter.
According to the Free Press Journal, the anti-terrorism squad in Maharashtra has detained a man from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on suspicion of sending the menacing email.
The anonymous sender of the threat was located in Mumbai, but the police in Sahar were able to determine their internet protocol (IP) address, giving them a good indication of where the email originated from.
The cyber division of the police station has traced the location and the squad is in the process of identifying the individual behind transmitting the threat, according to Sahar police.
