Volaris, a subsidiary of the Mexican airline now accepts Bitcoin payments
El Salvador’s Bitcoin acceptance drive continues apace, expanding this time to include a local airline. Volaris El Salvador, a local subsidiary of cheap Mexican airline Volaris, will take Bitcoin as payment as a consequence of El Salvador’s widespread acceptance of Bitcoin (BTC).
The Bitcoin transaction came less than a month after Salvadoran aviation officials approved Volaris’ local subsidiary’s operation in the nation.
Salvadoran President Niyab Bukele announced the airline’s acceptance of Bitcoin through Twitter. President Bukele said at a recent Volaris event held on Twitter that the option to pay using Bitcoin and the state-run Chivo wallet “allows us to expand the availability of flights for Salvadorans.”
The administration of Bukele has continued to encourage people to pay using Bitcoin and has even provided gasoline subsidies. Previously, the government spent $4 million in unrealized Bitcoin profits to finance infrastructure development initiatives, including a veterinary hospital.
Following in the footsteps of El Salvador, officials at a Venezuelan airport want to begin taking Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as payment for airline tickets and other services.
As previously reported by Cointelegraph, Simón Bolvar International Airport is collaborating with the National Superintendence of Crypto Assets and Related Activities to allow crypto payments as a way of adhering to local business norms.
The airport will allow payment in Bitcoin, Dash (DASH), and the Petro, a government-issued oil-backed currency. Borges said that “we must progress in these new economic and technical systems in order to be accessible.”
