Vitalik Buterin Criticizes El Salvador’s Policy on Bitcoin Adoption

The Ethereum co-founder termed people who lauded the action blindly “reckless.” President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has received recurrent international criticism for his strongman style of governance.

On Reddit, Buterin Expresses Concerns Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has slammed El Salvador’s “forced” Bitcoin adoption policy, calling it “rash” and “contrary to the principles of liberty that are meant to be so dear to the crypto community.” Buterin was replying to a post on the /r/CryptoCurrency subreddit condemning El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele’s signature cryptocurrency legislation for its mandatory character.

By claiming that “pushing BTC to millions of individuals” without making “any effort at previous education” will end in frauds and hacks, Buterin went on to attack members in the crypto community who blindly support Bukele’s contentious stance. He was particularly critical of “Bitcoin maximalists,” whom he referred to as “the primary individuals responsible” for reinforcing a solely joyful tone in reaction to the new legislation.

El Salvador’s Bitcoin adoption legislation has not been without controversy, having sparked demonstrations earlier this year and garnering widespread criticism for the government’s implementation. Additionally, President Nayib Bukele has been under fire in the past for his authoritarian inclinations, which include employing strongarm methods to force his agendas through the Legislative Assembly and referring to himself on as “dictator.

The whole quotation is as follows: “There is nothing unpopular about this viewpoint. Making it obligatory for companies to accept a particular cryptocurrency runs counter to the crypto space’s stated values of liberty. Additionally, this strategy of simultaneously distributing BTC to millions of individuals in El Salvador with little to no previous knowledge is irresponsible, putting a huge number of innocent people at risk of being hacked or defrauded. Shame on everyone (well, alright, I’ll single out the primary culprits: shame on Bitcoin maximalists) who blindly praises him.”
