Twitter Updates Tips Feature to Include Bitcoin and Lightning
Twitter, the social media behemoth, announced today that it will begin rolling out a Bitcoin tipping function this week on iOS smartphones and then “in the coming weeks” on Android cellphones.
Users will be able to tip their favorite content creators, analysts, traders, and influencers via the new function. Additionally, it is another manner in which the cryptocurrency is fast acquiring global awareness, courtesy of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
Jack Dorsey’s Ongoing Support for Bitcoin Expands to Include a New Tips Feature
Today, Jack Dorsey is one of the most vocal champions of Bitcoin. He recently squared off against Cathie Wood and Elon Musk in the B-Word. His contributions are sufficient to rival those of Hal Finney, who assisted Satoshi in establishing the fledgling Bitcoin.
Square, Inc., his firm, keeps bitcoin as part of its corporate treasury strategy and is developing a cryptocurrency wallet. CashApp aims to make Bitcoin more accessible to the general public. And soon Twitter’s Tips feature will support Bitcoin.
This past May, the company began testing the tipping feature. It allows users to tip their favorite content creators or anyone they follow on Twitter.
Users could tip using fiat currency via Square’s CashApp or competitor Venmo during the test. To take advantage, users must provide a BTC address in order to send or receive cryptocurrency tips.

Twitter Will Leverage the Strike Lightning Network to Promote Financial Inclusion Without Barriers
Twitter announced the move today in an official corporate blog post, explaining that users often include links in their bios to solicit support. This is now a built-in feature of Twitter.
The connection was made possible by a partnership between Twitter and Jack Mallers’ Strike lightning wallet. Strike announced its Strike API platform as part of the Twitter Tips launch to “service marketplace and merchant enterprises” like the social media firm.
Along with Bitcoin, the social media giant added PicPay and GoFundMe from Brazil, joining the likes of Venmo, CashApp, Bandcamp, and Patreon.
“We want to ensure that everyone on Twitter has a path to earning money. Digital currencies that encourage more people to engage in the market and enable individuals to transmit money across borders with the least amount of friction possible – these help us get there,” Twitter noted in explaining their decision to embrace Bitcoin.
