Russian-speaking hackers collect seventy percent of cryptocurrency profits
TRM Labs performed a study that indicates that Russia’s involvement in illicit crypto operations increased significantly in 2023.
The report revealed that Russia has a substantial role in the global cybercrime sector, as these entities have took nearly half a billion US dollars.
The research highlights ALPHV/BlackCat and Lockbit, two ransomware operators that generated revenues exceeding $320 million. Lockbit, a sanctioned hacker, has targeted the Royal Mail and Boeing in the United Kingdom.
MGM Resorts and Henry Schein, a Fortune 500 dental and medical supply wholesaler, are the targets of BlackCat/ALPHV. These assaults not only demonstrate the sophistication and extensiveness of these organizations, but also the substantial financial losses that their victims endured as a result.
The TRM Labs research emphasizes that Russia is the focal point of the concentration of sanctioned crypto volumes. It is remarkable that Garantex, a single Russian exchange, facilitated over 80% of all cryptocurrency transactions that were subject to sanctions.
This Moscow-based trading company has evolved into a significant global center for these businesses, as the majority of bitcoin transactions associated with approved entities now pass through it.
Garantex’s monopoly on sanctioned crypto volumes may render the current regulatory procedures insufficient. The fact that it has persisted in operation in spite of the penalties underscores the challenges that law enforcement agencies face when trying to reduce unlawful crypto activity. More surveillance and regulation are required due to the large number of sanctioned cryptocurrency transactions on a single exchange.
Cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly popular as a means of circumventing sanctions that have been implemented as a consequence of Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The TRM Labs research indicates that US officials have prohibited Bitcoin and Ether addresses that are associated with these evasion techniques on numerous occasions.
Criminals and hackers’ rapid adaptation to emergent new technologies is evident in the use of bitcoin or cryptocurrency in general to evade sanctions and engage in cross-border trade.
The significance of a global initiative to effectively combat, if not supervise, filthy cryptocurrency activities is underscored by the widespread use of crypto for illicit purposes.
The analysis recognizes that North Korea remains a significant participant in cryptocurrency crime, despite concerns regarding Russia. In 2023, North Korean hackers seized $1 billion in cryptocurrency, thereby demonstrating their global cybersecurity menace.
