Russia Cashes In 1032 Bitcoin on Record Bribery Scandal

Marat Tambiev, a former investigator of the Investigative Committee, has initiated the transfer of over 1 billion rubles in Bitcoin to state revenue by Russian bailiffs.

During an investigation into his association with a cyber organization, Tambiev, who was convicted of accepting the largest recorded bribe in the history of Russia, had more than 1,000 Bitcoin confiscated.

In 2023, the Nikulinsky Court ordered the loss of 1032.1 BTC, which was considered to have been acquired through unconfirmed sources of income, at the request of the prosecutor’s office. The Bitcoin has been transferred to Russia’s treasury as a result of this seizure. The initial phase of the procedure involved the conversion of the cryptocurrency into over 1 billion rubles.

The investigation uncovered that Tambiev utilized his position to assist the hackers in concealing illicit funds and divert police investigations. Tambiev denied all charges during his trial, despite his conviction. He declined any offers of collaboration with the authorities and declined to acknowledge his culpability. He even defended his associate, Lyakhovenko, during judicial proceedings, referring to her as “a minor and a victim.”

Although Russia has initiated the process of changing the seized Bitcoin into rubles, the process has not been without its obstacles. Tambiev had divided the Bitcoin into smaller quantities, necessitating that the authorities submit frequent court requests to acquire and dispose of all of the coins. Real estate and a motorcycle are among the assets that Tambiev is currently reviewing for liquidation, in addition to Bitcoin.

The Russian government is resolute in its efforts to reclaim the plundered assets and reinstate them into the state’s revenue, despite all of these complications.
