Miami’s mayor is not giving up on his aim to use bitcoin to pay employees’ wages. He states that relocation is a “top priority” for the city.
The mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, has restated his intention to enable the government to pay its employees’ salaries in bitcoin. The multi-pronged idea would enable residents to pay taxes and levies using Bitcoin, a ground-breaking step in the United States. The mayor revealed the news in an interview with Bloomberg, noting that the move would position the city “as the United States or world’s crypto capital.”
“We’re planning to issue a request for proposal in October to enable our staff to be paid in Bitcoins and to allow our people to pay fees and perhaps even taxes in Bitcoin, if the nation permits,” the mayor explains. He asserts that the decision is a top priority for the administration, recalling that a similar proposal got significant support from municipal commissioners in February.
Suarez said, “Had we been able to hold it from the time I placed the resolution on our agenda, it would be up by 30% or 40%, and I would have looked like a genius back then.” Other roadblocks to the mayor’s ambitions include a law that prohibits the city from keeping any Bitcoin, although the idea has been backed by government supporters.
In favor of Bitcoin Mayor Francis Suarez has made no secret of his fondness for Bitcoin and has used every opportunity to boost the asset’s cause. In June, he announced that the city would be welcoming Chinese miners who had been the target of a contentious cryptocurrency crackdown. The mayor alluded to the city’s availability of nuclear energy as one of the incentives that would attract miners, owing to its low cost.
During Bitmain’s Digital Mining Conference, the mayor urged participants to “get out there and elect a pro-Bitcoin president.” His statements are aimed at changing Miami into the country’s primary cryptocurrency center, despite the city’s success with MiamiCoin, which generated a sizable profit for the city.
