Madonna is the latest celebrity to show off a new Bored Ape
Madonna has bought a non-fungible token (NFT) from Bored Ape worth more than half a million dollars.
On Thursday evening, the 63-year-old singer announced on Instagram that she had “entered the metaverse” by purchasing Bored Ape #4988, a cartoon monkey with crazy fur and a ‘S&M cap.’
She expressed gratitude in the post to MoonPay, a cryptocurrency payments company that has been acquiring high-value NFTs on behalf of celebrities since late last year.
MoonPay purchased Madonna’s Bored Ape for 180 ether (about $564,000) last week, according to transaction data on OpenSea, the NFT marketplace. The item was subsequently moved to a wallet allegedly held by Madonna two days ago, according to the business.
MoonPay moved Bored Ape #1506 to another wallet shortly thereafter. That item — a leopard-furred ape with an eyepatch — has subsequently become rapper Wiz Khalifa’s Twitter profile photo.
The new endorsements come at an exciting moment for Yuga Labs, the company that created the Bored Ape Yacht Club line. It just launched a new currency and is ready to launch a metaverse game project, in addition to earlier this week’s announcement of a $450 million investment from venture capitalists.
