Disney Spends $1.5 Billion on Epic Games to Develop Fortnite-Related Virtual World
A new, fully immersive virtual world based on Fortnite is in the works, thanks to a partnership between Disney, the entertainment behemoth, and Epic Games, the video game developer.
A recent press statement from Disney revealed that, in addition to the multi-year initiative, the company intends to spend $1.5 billion to purchase an ownership position in Epic Games.
Disney has offered some glimpses into their intentions, but information regarding this metaverse-like endeavor is still limited.
Along with a top-notch gaming experience and integration with Fortnite, the next persistent universe will provide players with a plenty of chances to interact with fan-favorite characters, plot points, and tales from Avatar, Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, and Pixar.
“Fans, players, and gamers will have the ability to craft their own narratives and encounters, showcase their devotion in a uniquely Disney manner, and exchange material in ways that they adore,” the business said.
Epic Games’ state-of-the-art technology, Unreal Engine, will drive the project. Disney fired all fifty employees from their metaverse branch last year, leaving no one to investigate potential new technical forms for interactive storytelling.
With Disney’s vast intellectual property portfolio as its starting point, the metaverse division set out to discover new technical forms for interactive storytelling. Nevertheless, Disney is effectively venturing into the realm of video games through this new partnership.
Disney CEO Bob Iger made the following statement: “This represents Disney’s largest foray yet into the world of gaming and provides substantial prospects for development and expansion.”
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, agreed, stating that the company’s goal is to build an ecosystem that brings together the Disney and Fortnite communities in a way that is permanent, open, and linked.
The CEO and Founder of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, said that Disney “believed in the promise of merging their worlds together with ours in Fortnite” and that the company uses Unreal Engine across its products.
