Belgian Member of Parliament Is So Bullish on Bitcoin That He Converted His Entire Salary to Bitcoin

A Belgian member of parliament has cautioned that Europe’s “most serious danger” may be a failure to properly educate and welcome Bitcoin.

Christophe De Beukelaer explained in an interview with Cointelegraph that he decided last month to convert his entire salary (5,500 euros per month) for this year to Bitcoin in order to increase financial literacy, contribute to financial education in Belgium and throughout Europe, and to send a message that Bitcoin is a good store of value.

According to a story published on Wednesday (February 16) by Cointelegraph, De Beukelaer, who first became interested in Bitcoin and blockchain technology in 2017, believes there is a future in which crypto acts as a “counterpart” to the conventional financial sector. The Belgian lawmaker cautioned that ignoring Bitcoin and neglecting to educate oneself about cryptocurrency constituted a big danger to all Europeans.

As he said, One of the most serious threats facing Europe at the time […] The political class does not allow for this voyage. They are very busy administering cities and nations on a day-to-day basis, but they do not pause to ask, OK, what is happening now? What are the major changes that will occur during the next 10, 20, 50 years? That is the task.

He described a lack of understanding of Bitcoin as a “major issue” and warned that Europe risks slipping behind China and the United States in the domain of digital assets.

When asked why he picked Bitcoin over other cryptocurrencies, De Beukelaer said that he chose Bitcoin because it is the oldest [and] most stable protocol, and maybe the only one that is completely decentralised and secure due to proof-of-work consensus.
