Vitalik Buterin Discusses Decentralization During Ethereum Upgrade Debate

In response to comments made by Péter Szilágyi, a principal developer on the Ethereum team, Vitalik Buterin has addressed apprehensions regarding the organization’s commitment to decentralization.

Szilágyi had previously expressed his apprehensions regarding Ethereum’s development trend and potential centralization.

Buterin strongly rejected allegations that the research team is advancing toward centralization. He emphasized the discussions from a recent Foundation research workshop that were designed to reduce centralization. These discussions included the exploration of alternative proposer models, the enhancement of inclusion lists, and the optimization of fork selection based on transaction inclusion. The Orbit mechanism’s deployment was also accelerated in order to reduce the staking deposit requirements, as Buterin also mentioned.

Szilágyi’s criticism of the proposed PeerDAS upgrade, which would increase Ethereum’s blob size to 32 MB, sparked the controversy. Szilágyi contended that this could potentially undermine decentralization by making it difficult for house stakers to participate. For the sake of substantiation, his social media posts implied that the research team was compromising on decentralization.

The primary objective of Buterin’s response is to ensure the community that decentralization remains a top priority in the development of Ethereum. This debate is indicative of the ongoing discussions within the Ethereum ecosystem regarding the integration of technological advancements with the principle of decentralization.

Buterin has previously contrasted the decentralization of Ethereum to that of Bitcoin and other networks from a broader perspective. He observed that Ethereum’s network is more decentralized than Bitcoin’s, which is characterized by a small number of mining pools controlling a substantial fraction of the computing resources at ETHCC in Brussels. This comparison emphasizes Ethereum’s dedication to a decentralized structure as it develops.
